Gift of sight
The Gift of Sight program was inaugurated in December 2012 in memory of Sri Satuwa Baba Maharaj. Through this project, the sight of those blinded by eye cataracts is being restored.
Sai Maa Vishnu Shakti Trust is working together with the Vivekanand Mission, who offer eye health camps in medically underserved rural areas throughout eastern Uttar Pradesh. These camps serve a population of over 100,000. At the camps, doctors identify persons suitable for cataract surgery. They consider factors such as age, overall health, allergies, and the integrity of an individual’s immune system to increase the chances of successful surgery. The camps are only held through the winter months as the hot weather characteristic of the rest of the year significantly increases the chances of infection, adding an unnecessary risk for those participating.
Goal : Raise $5,000 TO SPONSOR ONE HUNDRED Cataract surgeries
Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes clouded and vision gradually decreases. Eventually this clouding leads to blindness. Cataracts are very common amongst the poorer communities in India, especially in the elderly. Poor nutrition, lifestyle factors such as the quality of fuel used in cooking, and lack of education have been cited as contributing to the high incidence.
The Gift of Sight program sponsors one hundred (100) cataract operations, performed by a team of skilled ophthalmologists. The surgeries are done in facilities located near the villages where the camps are held. After the operations, the doctors provide 30 days of comprehensive follow-up support for each patient. Tests are performed to determine eye health and strength of vision, and they monitor the use of the protective glasses provided to the patients. The follow-up also includes 2 additional camps where continuing education to minimize the risk of infection is provided. The main hazard to successful surgery is the patient rubbing their eye and introducing an infection but due to the diligence of the staff, the operations currently have a 99% success rate.
